Sinking fund records of Kentucky penitentiaries, 1891-1894.

These records document Governor John Young Brown's role as chairman of the Board of the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund. The commissioners served as directors of Kentucky penitentiaries. Included are letters from prisoners and prison officials concerning prison conditions, and from private companies who leased convict labor; requests for appointment to positions in the prison system, and resignations; copies of bids and contracts for construction and repair projects, and for convict labor; and several miscellaneous documents, including a list of escapees over a one-year period.
